When you think others are looking?

I used to go without,
my skin bare to gapes and stares
until I could take the cold no more
and icy shards drew blood.

Now
I wear a simple disguise
loose and ill-fitting
that slips too often and shows too much
but seems to keep the chill at bay.

I see others with such colorful displays
of masks and plumes and capes and gowns
and I wonder

what fears lurk beneath?

I really like this piece its well done and a fun idea. Do not take this the wrong way but the chimney looks like its in an odd spot because it doesnt line up with the stipe of the mushroom.
